A live shaft idler is a roll whose central shaft or journal rotate. The live shaft roll has a bit more complexity than the dead shaft design. For example, the roll heads and journals have more machining involved. Live shaft rolls can be driven as a pull or draw roll and utilized as transport roller. (Transport roller is intended to not to affect the web properties in any permanent way.) Or, a live shaft roll can have more specifications and used as a processing roll (ie chill roll, calender roll, embossing roll, or treater roll). A processing roll is intended to change or modify the web in some permanent way.
